2007 is certainly proving to be a boom year for Israeli films on the international festival circuit. The year started with ‘Sweet Mud’ claiming the prestigious Jury Prize at the acclaimed Sundance Film Festival, Robert Redford’s baby for independent films. But slipping under the radar was the documentary award for the film ‘Hothouse’. Less than a month later, not only was ‘Sweet Mud’ gaining an award at the Berlinale (arguably 2nd only to Cannes on the European film festival circuit), but two more films were presented with awards. The world premiere of Joseph Cedar’s ‘Beaufort’ led to the Silver Bear for Best Director, whilst ‘The Bubble’, already a Box Office success in Israel, walked away with the CICAE and Siegessäule Readers Jury awards.

And there’s been no stopping Israeli films (both feature and documentary) since then – topped off by the latest news of Etgar Keret and Shifra Geffen receiving the Camera d’Or (Best First Director) at the Cannes International Film Festival for their film ‘Jellyfish’.
