Betipul

One of the most successful Israeli films of 2007, 'HaHov' (The Debt), has been purchased by Miramax, in order to be remade into a Hollywood blockbuster. The film, which was not released in the USA, revolves around the fictional story of three Mossad agents who were involved in the detention of the infamous 'Surgeon of Treblinka' – a Nazi monster who was never brought to trial in Israel. Officially, he committed suicide while being held captive; however, 35 years on, news of the surgeon's resurfacing gets out and the three agents, now in their 60s, set out to pursue him across Europe.

The Miramax purchase follows an increasing trend of successful foreign language films being remade in Tinsel Town. Movies such as 'The Birdcage' ('La Cage aux Folles'), 'Vanilla Sky' ('Abre Los Ojos') and 'True Lies' ('La Totale!') all received the Hollywood treatment, before becoming amazingly successful in the English language market.

While 'HaHov' is one of the first Israeli films to be remade into an English language feature, a new American television series, 'In Treatment', is based entirely upon an Israeli series of the same name. 'Betipul' ('In Treatment') focuses on the life of a therapist and the varied patients who come to him for treatment.

'HaHov' can be seen at the AICE Israeli Film Festival in Sydney from the 25th – 31st August, and in Melbourne from the 1st – 7th September.
