The most successful (to date) Israeli film at the home box-office of 2008 became the highest nominated film for this year's Ophir awards. 'Lost Islands', which has already sold 120,000 tickets in just four weeks of release, received a total of 14 nods. But close behind it was the Jerusalem Film Festival success, 'Seven Days', which received 13 nods following its Best Film & Best Picture at the Wolgin awards (and which has yet to be commercially released). 'Waltz With Bashir' gained, as an animated film, no acting accolades but still received 7 nominations.
2008 is generally recognised as a good, consolidating year for Israeli film, rather than the extraordinary 2007. Last year saw 'The Band's Visit' become the most successful Israeli film at the global box-office ($US11 million and still counting), accolades and international awards galore at film festivals as well as 1.5 million ticket sales for Israeli films at the home box office. 2008 has still offered film festival favourites, with 'Waltz With Bashir' poised to become a big international success.
Australian audiences have the opportunity to see three of the nominated films earlier than would have been expected.
'Just Like Your Father', Marco Carmel's semi-autobiographical trip down the crooked lane of his childhood (five nominations including Best Film and Best Direction) and the documentary 'The Beetle' feature in the AICE Israeli Film Festival 2008. 'Waltzing With Bashir' is commercially released in Australia in the middle of September.
