Phil Scanlan AM: first appointed Governor of Australia Israel Cultural Exchange


Albert Dadon AM was delighted to announce today that Phil Scanlan AM has accepted the invitation to become the first Governor of the Australia Israel Cultural Exchange.

Phil Scanlan has an enterprise career embracing more than 25 years with public companies as chief executive, director and chairman spanning the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Europe and North America; he is the founder of the Australian American Leadership Dialogue and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, an Executive Fellow of Melbourne Business School as well as a Fellow at the Australia and New Zealand School of Government. He is a National Governor of the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce, a longstanding member of the YPONJPO global entrepreneurial network, a board member of Asialink and has served on the Business Council of Australia.

'Key to bilateral strategic engagement is mutual understanding of the underlying societal and cultural imperatives driving human excellence in chosen fields of endeavour. The focus of Australia Israel Cultural Exchange is core to this dynamic between our countries.' stated Phil Scanlan.

Educated at Sydney, Adelaide, Oxford and Harvard universities, Mr Scanlan has served on the Fulbright board and was inaugural Chairman of The Sydney Institute, where he remains Emeritus Governor. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1998 in recognition of his voluntary service to international relations and promotion of public health and environmental concerns. In 2003 he received the Centenary Medal.

Background: Formed on 2nd of December 2002 through the only Joint Declaration ever between the Australia and Israel Governments, simultaneously announced by satellite in Canberra and Jerusalem by the respective Foreign Ministers Alexander Downer and Benjamin Netanyahou, AICE quickly established itself as a principal partner in the promotion and facilitation of cultural exchange between the two countries across many art forms. More recently, an increasing focus of its work has been one of advocacy for cultural exchange and understanding, achieved through the organisation of a number of delegations of key politicians, academics, journalists and cultural representatives to both Australia and Israel alongside the publication of the quarterly magazine, Rhapsody.
