Lost Islands and Seven Days were the films with most nominations under their belt, but the big winner on the night was Waltz With Bashir. Laden with international awards and tipped as an Oscar nomination for Best Animation (which would be an Israeli first), Ari Folman's labour of love took out 6 of its 7 nominations, including Best Film and Best Director. As a result, it automatically becomes Israel’s nomination for Best Foreign Language film at the Oscars (and which should avoid last year’s controversy when The Band's Visit was disqualified due to the amount of English spoken on screen).
Lost Islands, the most successful Israeli film at the home box-office in 2008, gained 4 awards, including Best Actor (Michael Moshonov) and Best Supporting Actor (Shmil Ben Ariz), whilst the Jerusalem Film Festival success, Seven Days, picked up just 2 awards. Haim Abbass capped off a successful year (US independent film success, The Visitor: Jim Jarmusch's soon to be released The Limits of Control: numerous awards for her role in Lemon Tree) by winning the Best Actress accolade for Lemon Tree (her third nomination).
But spare a thought for veteran actor, Moshe Ivgy – three acting nominations for three different films (a first), but he walked away empty handed. He shared the honours with Alon Abutboul at the Jerusalem Film Festival with 'Out of the Blue', but 'Lost Islands' proved to be the male acting success story of the year. Ivgy can take solace in the fact he has received a total of eight Academy Award nominations, winning twice (1995 – 'Lovesick on Nana St.' and 2004 – 'Metallic Blues').
