A film festival favourite but little seen on commercial release in Australia took the main award when the IF Awards were announced at Queensland’s Gold Coast in November. Men's Group, a small independent film that proved to be a popular favourite at many of the Australian film festivals, received the Best Film accolade, along with Best Actor (Grant Dodwell) and Best Script. The other main winner on the night was Unfinished Sky, which took home 4 awards, including Best Director (Peter Duncan) and Best Actress (Monic Hendrickx).
The film with the highest box office takings for the year, The Black Balloon, with 10 nominations, was expected to fair better than its single award for box-office achievement, especially as the awards are voted for through the internet and are open to the general public.
Many of the films shortlisted for the awards will be seen in Israel in June 2009 as part of the AICE Australian Film Festival.
