It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the sixth AICE Australian Film Festival.

2008 saw Australian independent film move into the spotlight and we are delighted to be able to present a diverse and innovative program of contemporary Australian cinema.

From the rugged hills of Afghanistan to the unforgiving Kokoda track, from cosmopolitan Sydney to the back blocks of suburban Melbourne, this year’s program offers you a chance to share in stories that will move and inspire you. There are works from exciting new directors including the beautifully crafted The Black Balloon by Elissa Down, the finely nuanced Three Blind Mice by Matthew Newton and The Combination a startlingly raw film by David Field. Reflecting the global nature of the Australian industry is the absorbing drama Disgrace based on Nobel laureate JM Coetzee’s award-winning novel and starring John Malkovich. Men’s Group and Bitter and Twisted are insightful dramas tackling strong themes and the action-packed thriller The Square from the Edgerton brothers will have you on the edge of your seat.

Documentary film is an art form as well as a means to promote critical thinking on real life issues and this year’s AICE Film Festival features three intelligent and inspirational films Tackling Peace, The Oasis and Salute.

We also invite you to discover the independent spirit of emerging creative talent in the award winning selection of short films featured in this year’s festival.

Artistically, this was an exceptionally creative year.

I hope you enjoy the festival!
